Fight Overview

The Main Event of UFC 248 features an unlikely yet highly exciting matchup with the UFC middleweight championship on the line. Adesanya was originally scheduled to defend his title against Romero’s most recent foe, Paolo Costa. But when that fight fell through due to injury, the stylebender then set his sights on the divisions dark horse, a fighter feared by most in the middleweight division, the Cuban missile crisis, Yoel Romero.

Even though his is the current middleweight title holder, Israel Adesanya believes that he needs a win over Romero to solidify his legacy, silence the naysayers and convert what is left of the non-believers that he is undoubtedly the best Middleweight on the planet.

Before commencing his MMA career, “The Stylebender” was a two-division kickboxing world champion. Prior to entering the UFC octagon, Adesanya held a pro MMA record of 11 – 0 with 11 finishes.

He then went on to defeat many high-profile opponents such as Derek Brunson and Anderson Silva before having an all-out war vs Kelvin Gastelum where he displayed his toughness and earned himself the interim middleweight strap.

His next matchup was a title unification bout vs Robert “The Reaper” Whittaker”, a champion who has fought Yoel Romero for 10 rounds in two successful title defenses. It only took two rounds for Adesanya to defeat the Australian champ.

For those of you that don’t know, Yoel Romero is a decorated Olympic silver medalist in wrestling who converted himself into an unorthodox KO artist. Although Romero has been unsuccessful in his last two bouts, many fans argue that the decisions could have gone either way, and despite his age, he remains ever-dangerous.

His most recent fight versus Paulo Costa was absolute chaos from the get-go and an instant classic. This upcoming title fight is Yoel’s 3rd chance to win UFC gold (4th if we count the interim title fight vs Luke Rockhold where Romero missed weight and was no longer eligible to win a championship), this may be his last chance at UFC gold and he is expected to perform as such.

When it comes to this fight prediction, the words “be careful what you wish for” keep coming to mind when I think of Adesanya’s gutsy request to defend his title against the feared Romero. I strongly believe that although Israel Adesanya possesses elite level kickboxing abilities, it will be his ability to sprawl and get back to his feet quickly that could end up being the deciding factor this time around.

I see Yoel entertaining the kickboxing match with Adesanya for a little while, most probably until the 3rd round before he goes in for the kill.

For Adesanya I could only image that the best game-plan would have to have would be to drag Yoel into the deep waters of the championship rounds and look to be the first ever fighter to finish the Cuban powerhouse.

Prediction: Yoel Romero via KO/TKO in round 3

Fight overview

The co-main event of UFC 248 is a matchup between two of the best female fighters to ever grace the UFC strawweight division.

The challenger, Joanna Jedrzejczyk was the longest reigning champion in the divisions history and held the title for 966 days, a record which is yet to be beaten.

Since she lost her title 850 plus days ago, there have been 3 new champions in the women’s straw-weight division; “Thug” Rose Namajunas, Jessica Andrade, and last but not least her next opponent and toughest challenge to date, the first ever Chinese UFC champion, Weili Zhang.

After a recent win over Michelle Waterson, Joanna looks to take back what she believes has always been hers, the UFC strawweight title. She possesses elite striking skills and is very good at keeping the fight where she performs best; on the feet. Due to her opponents’ knockout power, I can see Joanna having to fight while moving backwards for most of the fight and not try to look for the finish.

If Joanna puts on a performance similar to the one she had in her fight vs Jessica Andrade, then Weili Zhang could be in for a long and frustrating night. What I’m trying to say basically is that I think Joanna’s best road to victory would be to out-point her opponent.

When it comes to the champion Weili Zhang, any of her social media followers know that she spends most of her everyday life in the gym where she displays great discipline and a strong work ethic. For her most recent training camp, Zhang had to move to Thailand due to concerns over the coronavirus.

Although she has been in the UFC for just under two years, I believe Weili Zhang is on another level from every other fighter in the straw-weight division and will hold on to the belt for a very long time. At the ceremonial weight ins, Zhang told the fans “don’t blink, I could knock her out at any second of the fight”.

Prediction: Weili Zhang via KO / TKO in round 3

Strongest attributes: Boxing, Striking Pressure, Power.

Fight Overview

The Main Event of UFC 241 features a rematch of the highest caliber we have ever witnessed in UFC heavyweight history. Stipe Miocic will be looking to earn back his championship belt from the same guy that took it from him, the very same fighter who stopped his record-breaking title defense streak in its tracks, Daniel “DC” Cormier.

We all know how the first fight went down. On July 7th 2018, Daniel Cormier, who at the time was the UFC light heavyweight champion, moved up a weight class in hopes of gaining a 2nd belt. Miocic, who had already ran through all major heavyweight contenders, accepted this exciting challenge with open arms.

Danie Cormier was quick to make his opponent regret this decision as he threw an elbow to the jaw of Miocic, which dropped the former champion as he was transitioning out of a clinch position. Cormier then swarmed the champion and finished the fight with heavy ground and pound, achieving his dream of holding two titles simultaneously in the world premier mixed martial arts promotion, the UFC.

Before this knockout took place Miocic was doing very well, implementing his boxing pressure and using his massive height and reach advantage, I do not see this game plan changing much for the second time around as it was working very well for him up until he made a tiny error which cost him his belt. I think we will be seeing a sprawl and brawl approach from Miocic this time around as he will try to avoid clinching and wrestling with DC.

When it comes to Daniel Cormier, we all know that he has cardio for days and feels comfortable anywhere in the fight, but especially in wrestling positions, where he has Olympic level experience.

Prior to all of this, Stipe Miocic was known for being a KO artist and an all-round unstoppable force, who beat his former opponents using his power and heart.

Although Cormier won the first fight, I do not see history repeating itself this time around, and if I’m being completely honest, I never thought he would win the first fight either. The former champion possesses a huge height and reach advantage over Cormier and tends to get into his flow early, unlike Cormier who usually takes time to adjust during the first round. Not to mention this will be by far the most motivated version of Stipe Miocic we have witnessed to date.

Prediction: Miocic Via KO in Round 1

Co-Main Event: Anthony “Showtime” Pettis vs Nate Diaz

Tale of the Tape:

Anthony “Showtime” Pettis ( -135 Favorite ):

MMA Record: 22 – 8 – 0

Age: 32

Height: 1.78 m

Weight: 169.5 lbs

Reach: 184.2 cm

Strongest attributes: Vast arsenal of kicks, Unpredictable striking, Utilizes the cage to perform spectacular techniques.

Nate Diaz ( +115 Underdog ) :

MMA Record: 19 – 11 – 0

Age: 34

Height: 1.83 m

Weight: 170 lbs

Reach: 193 cm

Country: USA

Strongest Attributes: Gracie Jiu Jitsu Blackbelt, Elite Boxing, Triathlete-level cardio.

Fight Overview:

This is without a doubt the people’s main event which features two MMA legends in Anthony “Showtime” Pettis and Nate Diaz.

Pettis is a former UFC lightweight champion who always shows up to a fight with two goals in mind: #1 Get the W, #2 put on a show for the fans and Diaz is an MMA superstar who is true fighter at heart who keeps moving forward with a never back down attitude.

Considering the fact that both of these fighters possess an elite ground game, it would come to no surprise for me if this welterweight battle is fought entirely on the feet. This could cause problems for Nate Diaz early on as he tends to start slow in the first 7 ½ minutes of the fight before he really gets going.

Nate Diaz’s best route to victory would probably be waiting for Pettis to lose some of his energy early in the fight before bombarding the former lightweight champion with boxing combinations, which will hopefully result in Pettis shooting for a takedown.

If the fight ends up on the ground in round 3, Nate has a huge arsenal of submissions at his disposal which he could use to make Pettis tap out. However it goes without saying that both of these fighters will be very well prepared and I don’t see either one of them making a mistake at any point.

I predict Pettis will be the more active fighter in round one which will of course result in him winning that round. Round two is a very tricky round to predict as this is the round where Nate Diaz really gets into his flow state and turns into an unstoppable force.

I think that round two is crucial for both fighters, if either one wins this round, they very well may be on their way to winning the entire fight.

I also think round 3 will be all about Nate Diaz as it is a very well known fact that once he gets going, he doesn’t get any slower. This is not the case for Anthony Pettis who tends to slow down and become an easier target to hit as the fight progresses. This is by far the trickiest fight to predict on the entire card.

Prediction: Nate Diaz via Unanimous Decision

Weight: 186 lbs

Reach: 182.9 cm

Strongest attributes: Strong Body-kick, Power puncher / kicker, Throws every strike with confidence and bad intentions,

Fight Overview:

This is a fight between a Cuban veteran of MMA in Yoel Romero who has been competing at the very highest levels of the sport for the vast majority of his career, vs an undefeated (12-0) prospect in the young Brazilian Paulo Costa.

Although Costa is undefeated as a pro, it is noteworthy that he did actually lose a fight (split decision) during an exhibition match on “The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil 3”. His stamina is to blame for this blemish on his record, as it is well known that he is built like a tank and likes to throw significant strikes very early in the fight.

This could cause major problems for Romero early on as he tends to get his timing where it needs to be, as well as implementing his awkward movement during the opening round before getting too involved in exchanges with his opponents.

Costa on the other hand, tends to fight with supreme confidence that he will get the finish early and I predict that he will be throwing heavy strikes as soon as the bell sounds. I would also not be surprised if Costa tries to take Romero down to show that he is not intimidated by Romero’s Olympic level wrestling ability.

I think that ultimately Paulo Costa will be his own worst enemy during this fight in the sense that if he tries to continually test Romero in the grappling department he will find himself gassing out by round 3.

History has shown us that round 3 is where Romero really gets comfortable and tuned into the fight. If Yoel can survive the heavy barrage which Costa will be bombarding him with during the opening rounds, I predict that his opponent (Costa) will be out of gas by then and become an easy target for a very agile and dangerous Romero.

Fight Prediction: Romero Via KO in Round 3

Main Event Overview

Colby Covington is very well known for mixing it up between wrestling, striking and constant pressure. He is also the former interim Welterweight champion, but had that title stripped from him after failing to come to agreeable terms with the UFC to fight then champion Tyron “The Chosen One” Woodley.

In his most recent fight he dominated his opponent Rafael Dos Anjos and took the fight to a decision. It is good to note that RDA is also a former opponent of Robbie Lawler and Beat Robbie a couple of fights ago and dominated him 50-45 on all scorecards. Covington and Lawler were also former team mates at American Top Team and Covington says he wants get revenge against Lawler for his team.

Robbie Lawler AKA “The Ruthless One” is a former champion and future hall of famer, and has been known to come out very strong vs opponents who enjoy trash talking. Most fans are hoping that they will get a vintage Robbie Lawler performance this Saturday. His most recent fight; a controversial loss to “Funky” Ben Askren will surely be a motivating factor for Lawler in his upcoming bout against Covington, also an avid trash talker.

Will we get a classic Ruthless Robbie Lawler performance tonight? Or will Colby’s wresting pressure get the better of him? Only time will tell. This is an extremely difficult fight to pick. But I will go with my gut feeling this time around.

Prediction: Robbie Lawler Via KO/TKO Round 3

The Featherweight Championship: Max “Blessed” Holloway vs Frankie “The Answer” Edgar

Tale of the Tape

Max ‘’Blessed’’ Holloway ( -400 Favorite )

MMA Record: 20 – 4 – 0

Age: 27

Height: 1.8m

Weight: 145lbs

Reach: 175.3cm

Country: Hawaii

Strongest attributes: Boxing. Pressure Fighting, Submissions

Max Holloway Overview

Max ‘’Blessed’’ Holloway, although coming off a decision loss in an interim lightweight title bout vs Dustin “The Diamond” Poirier, is still on a 13-fight winning streak at Featherweight, and if you ask me, there seems to be no end in sight, there aint no stopping the blessed express! Anyone who knows Max`s approach on how to take a loss could only imagine that he will re-group and come back stronger than ever. I firmly believe that Holloway will try to make a statement in this featherweight title defense, but that is a tremendous challenge when you consider Frankie Edgard’s constant pressure and threats from all areas of the fight.

Frankie ‘’The Answer’’ Edgar ( +300 Underdog):

MMA Record: 23 – 6 – 1

Age: 37

Height: 1.68m

Weight: 145lbs

Reach: 172.7cm

Country: U.S.A.

Strongest attributes: Boxing, Wrestling, Body-lock takedowns.

Frankie Edgar Overview

This former UFC Lightweight champion boasts victories of some of the best MMA talent across two eras. The last time this fighter won a championship, he dethroned Hawaiian MMA legend BJ Penn and followed up with a title defense vs the same fighter. Frankie’s relentless pace and ability to control where the fight goes will be a very tuff challenge for Max Holloway, who looks to keep his featherweight win streak going strong. Frankie Edgar knows deep down that this will probably be his last shot at UFC gold and will do everything in his ability to get the victory in this, the most important fight of his career, one in which, if he wins, will permanently cement his legacy as one of the greatest fighters of all time.

Fight Overview

When it comes to UFC 240’s main event, we are talking about a fight which was already meant to happen twice in the past, but never came to fruition due to Edgard being injured the first time they were matched up, and Holloway having suffered an injury the 2nd time around. Finally, after many attempts by the UFC to book this featherweight bout, it is finally happening. In this matchup I expect nothing less than constant pressure paired with relentless pace coming from both fighters during the entire bout. Both fighters are known for their durability and cardio. With so many similarities between these two fighters, I believe that age will be the deciding factor in this match.

Prediction: Holloway via Decision

Co-Main Event: Cris Cyborg vs Felicia Spencer

Tale of the Tape:

Cris Cyborg ( -650 Favorite ):

MMA Record: 20 – 2 – 0 – 1NC

Age: 34

Height: 1.73m

Weight: 145lbs

Reach: 172.7

Country: Brazil

Strongest attributes: KO Power, Brawler, Ground and Pound

Cris Cyborg Overview:

Cristiane Santos, better known as “Cyborg” is probably the most devastating striker to ever come out of women’s MMA and is always looking for a finish. She did not get the result she was looking for in her last bout which was a women’s featherweight title defense vs Amanda “The Lioness” Nunes, arguably the greatest female MMA fighter of all time. Nunes shocked the world when she beat Cyborg via first round KO. It is also notable that Cyborg is on the last fight of her UFC contract. Although she is facing an undefeated, ex Invicta FC Champion in Felicia Spencer, Cyborg will be entering this fight with one goal, get back in the win column, and do so in spectacular fashion.

Felicia Spencer ( +425 Underdog ) :

MMA Record: 7 – 0 – 0

Age: 28

Height: 1.68m

Weight: 145lbs

Reach: 172.7cm

Country: Canada

Strongest Attributes: Grappling, Ground and Pound, submissions.

Felicia Spencer Overview:

Felicia Spencer is a lifelong martial artist and most recent Invicta FC Featherweight champion. She relinquished that title to take her shot at MMA’s toughest proving grounds, the UFC. With her eyes set on UFC gold, Spencer will be looking to take Cris Cyborg to the ground as quickly as possible to avoid taking damage on the feet. Once she is there she will go for her strongest submission, which is her rear-naked choke, which she has used to defeat her last 3 opponents.

Fight Overview:

Cris Cyborg will undoubtedly be Spencer’s most dangerous adversary to date and the question beckons whether she can survive Cyborg’s heavy barrage of strikes in the opening seconds of the fight. If Spencer is unable to take the fight to the ground, and keep it there, we could easily be looking at a classic Cyborg KO or TKO victory.

Prediction: Cyborg via R1 KO/TKO

Geoff “Handz of Steel” Neal VS Niko “The Hybrid” Price

Tale of the Tape:

Geoff ‘’Handz of Steel’’ Neal ( -330 Favorite ):

Strongest attributes: High-level Stand-up fighter, Devastating Head Kicks, Rear naked Choke.

Geoff Neal Overview:

Neal is a fighter who made his way into the UFC via season one of Dana White’s Tuesday night Contender Series. Ever since winning his DWTNCS debut and getting signed to the UFC, Neal has gone on to secure 3 more victories, first via rear naked choke submission vs Brain Camozzi, second via and devastatingly violent head kick KO vs a durable opponent in Frank Camacho, and third via unanimous decision vs Belal Muhammad in January of this year.

Niko ‘’The Hybrid’’ Price ( +285 Underdog):

MMA Record: 13 – 2 – 0

Age: 29

Weight: 170lbs

Reach: 193cm

Country: USA

Strongest attributes: Unpredictable fighting style, Brawler, Dangerous in all areas (Stand up/ Clinch/ Ground), Multiple Round 1 KO victories.

Niko Price Overview:

This fighter is a one-man wrecking machine and goes in for the kill from the very first bell. His unpredictable fighting style matched up with his relentless pressure is what makes him so hard to deal with. Price does his best to not give his opponents a chance to figure him out and forces them into a brawl. It is also noteworthy that in his most recent bout, he became the first man to knock out Tim Means, a durable UFC . If he doesn’t knock his opponent out clean, he will follow them to the ground and look for their neck.

Fight Overview:

In this striker vs brawler matchup there will be fireworks. The deciding factor is this bout will be whether Geoff Neal can cope with the unpredictable and unrelenting attacks from The Hybrid, Niko Price. If he can, then I see a possibility of Geoff Neal getting a KO in round 2. However if he is unable to withstand the attack, then I can easily see Niko Price getting an early finish.

Fight Prediction: Niko Price via R2 KO/TKO

Arman Tsarukyan Overview:

This Armenian born UFC prospect did not have it easy when being introduced to the sports biggest stage. His 12 fight winning streak came to a half in his UFC debut when he faced Islam Makhachev at UFC Fight Night St Petersburg on the 20th of April 2019. This does not mean that all hope is lost, but he has another tough test ahead of him in Olivier Aubin-Mercier. This is surely the most crucial fight of Arman’s career as a 2’nd loss could easily see him being released from the world’s most popular MMA promotion.

Fight Overview:

I think Aubin-Mercier’s ability to stuff takedowns will be the deciding factor in this fight, both fighters are strong wrestlers as well as strikers, but I feel that Olivier’s octagon experience and ability to control the fight wherever it goes will be his key to getting his hand raised in his home country.
